Review Questions 1: Hannah Cagle, COM-110-80OLA 2016SP 1. Define communication and identify the key characteristics of communication? Communication is the process of creating meaning through symbolic interaction. The first key characteristic of communication is communication is a process. The second key characteristic of communication is communication is not relational, not individual. The third and final key characteristic of communication is symbolic. 2. Identify three dyadic communications where, as a result of the relationship involved, you have used self-monitoring to adapt and adjust your message in the midst of the exchange. Dyadic communication is the communication between two persons. The first of the dyadic communications can occur over the telephone. I have found myself using self-monitoring on the telephone because I never know who is listening, and how my words may be received by the other person on the other side of the line, especially if the other person is a family member or close friend. The second of the dyadic communications can occur via e-mail. E-mail is a form of dyadic communication that I use on a daily basis. Self-monitoring is extremely important when it comes to communicating via e-mail because e-mail is out there forever.
